Neurodiversity in the Studio Research Projects

Our most recent research project is called 'Neurodiversity in the Studio' we have developed this with Rambert School and supported by One Dance UK.

Phaedra Petsilas, Head of Studies at Rambert School has been working with us at Move Beyond Words alongside researcher Jessica Lowe at One Dance UK to develop support strategies for neurodivergent and neurotypical dancers within the studio and high-intensity environments.

Conducted with Rambert School 2nd year degree students, the aim was to discover how dancers operate within the studio environment, how they acknowledge learning styles and processes, use them to their advantage and how they can support peers.

Through research like this, we can grow a deeper understanding of structures and processes that may impact fellow dancers and their potential needs.

Move Beyond Words is expanding on research surrounding the prevalence of dyslexia amongst performers and strategies to support individuals to combat challenges they face within stressful environments and support mental wellbeing within and before and after these scenarios.

In 2018 Move Beyond Words carried out research supported by Arts Council England to discover ways of creating choreography and sharing this with dancers in a way that supports dysleixic thinkers and movers.

In 2021 we expanded on this research in developing and understanding more around supporting neurodivergent dancers within an audition setting.

In March 204 Move Beyond Words have partnered with Rambert School to delve deeper into how best to support dancers in high intensity environments such as auditions.
